About

Sophie Mawby

Yoga Teacher & Fragrance Specialist

We live in a society where busyness is prioritised over rest; where more importance is placed on constant striving and achieving than on appreciating and feeling gratitude for the things already in our lives; where we are on a permanent mission to improve ourselves rather than accepting and feeling at ease with who we are. Living in this way life becomes overwhelming and exhausting, and can lead to chronic stress, anxiety and burnout.

Yin Yoga Bristol is all about slowing down and finding balance in our lives, both on and off the mat

Sophie is a Bristol based yoga teacher and has been a dedicated yoga practitioner for over a decade, in various styles of yoga ranging from Hatha and Iyengar to Restorative, Yin and Yoga Nidra.  Sophie’s group classes now primarily focus on sharing her love of Yin yoga, having herself experienced the transformative effects of this meditative practice centred around releasing tension and cultivating stillness in body and mind through a series of held poses. By softening and surrendering into poses for a sustained length of time, we allow the deeper layers of the body to be stimulated: the fascia, ligaments, tendons, joints and bones, encouraging deep release of accumulated physical, mental and emotional stress and tension. In each session students are guided through a gentle and intuitive yoga practice that prioritises function over aesthetics; encouraged to focus awareness on how a pose feels rather than on how a pose looks.  Connection to the breath is a principal focus of the practice, restoring balance to the nervous system and nourishing overall sense of wellbeing.

Sophie offers private one-to-one sessions in Bristol and online and a weekly group yin yoga class in the beautiful studio at Windmill Hill City Farm in Bedminster. Her classes are suitable for all levels of experience, including complete beginners, with a focus on posture adaptations for all body types.

Before embarking on her teaching journey, Sophie worked in fragrance development for many years prior to re-locating from London to Bristol.  She continues her work in the fragrance industry as a Fragrance and Business Development Specialist for Shy Mimosa Perfumery in the heart of Clifton Village.  Sophie believes that our sense of smell is inherently linked to our emotional wellbeing and is passionate about sharing her decades of accumulated knowledge and expertise to educate others about the power of scent.  She has recently launched a series of workshops combining olfaction and yoga ( find out more here ).

Sophie is a qualified teacher of Hatha and Restorative yoga, Yin yoga, Yoga Nidra and is currently studying the Science of Wellbeing with Yale University.
